VFW Scholarships

The Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States (VFW) provides competitive scholarships for Middle School and High School students, scholarships for veterans and service members, and recognition awards for teachers at the k-5, Middle School and High School levels. The scholarships are administered under the Patriot's Pen Program for Middle School students, Voice of Democracy for High School students, and Sport Clips Help A Hero Scholarships for veterans and service members. Teacher recognition awards are also available.

Patriot’s Pen (Middle School)

PATRIOTS PEN

Patriot’s Pen theme for 2016 is “The America I Believe In.”

SUBMISSION:

  1. Typed essay in English of 300-400 words (no graphics)
  2. Completed and legible Patriot's Pen entry form
  3. Head and shoulders photograph of the contestant
  4. Must be submitted no later than midnight local time November first

JUDGING CRITERIA:

  1. Knowledge of the theme is worth 30 points. You must show a thorough knowledge of the theme in your work. Demonstrate you have researched the issue extensively.
  2. Theme development is worth 35 points. Answer all relevant facts about the theme such as the who, what, where, when and why. Relate the theme to your own experiences.
  3. Clarity of ideas is worth 35 points. Write your essay in an easy-to-understand format. Leave your reader with a clear understanding of your explanation of the theme.

Voice of Democracy (High School)

VOICE OF DEMOCRACY

The Voice of Democracy theme for 2016 will be “My Responsibility to America.”

SUBMISSION:

  1. Typed essay in English
  2. Standard audio cassette tape, audio CD or flash drive of the recorded essay (3-5 minutes, +/-5 seconds)
  3. Completed and legible Voice of Democracy entry form
  4. Head and shoulders photograph of the contestant
  5. Must be submitted no later than midnight local time November first

JUDGING CRITERIA:

  1. Originality is worth 30 points: Treatment of the theme should show imagination and human interest.
  2. Content is worth 35 points: Clearly express your ideas in an organized manner. Fully develop your theme and use transitions to move smoothly from one idea to the other.
  3. Delivery is worth 35 points: Speak in a clear and credible manner.

Teacher Award (K-5, 6-9, 10-12)

TEACHER AWARD

Anyone may nominate a teacher except for the teacher himself or herself (or the teacher’s relative.) While a school official may nominate a teacher, permission from a school or district is not required by the VFW.

SUBMISSION:

  1. Typed essay in English of 350 words or less, describing why you feel your nominee is deserving of the award. Be sure to describe the teacher's innovative teaching and resource development methods, as well as his or her dedication to education.
  2. Complete and legible VFW Smart/Maher National Citizenship Education Teacher Award nomination form found at the link below.
  3. A one-page resume of the teacher
  4. Up to five pages of documentation of their teaching experience (references, news articles, etc.)
  5. Head and shoulders photograph of the teacher
  6. Must be submitted no later than midnight local time February fifteenth

JUDGING CRITERIA:

  1. 1-25 points - Does the teacher teach and/or model good citizenship and community involvement?
  2. 1-25 points - An innovative approach to teaching citizenship.
  3. 1-25 points - Development of resources to teach citizenship education.
  4. 1-25 points – Passion for teaching citizenship education.

The Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States has announced the winners of the Youth Scholarships (Patriot's Pen and Voice of Democracy) Competition for 2014-15.
