The John Lukac VFW Post 12093 adopted Post By-laws at the regular business meeting June 13, 2013. The most significant change is moving the meeting time to 6:30 PM. Not in the by-laws but announced at the same meeting was moving the Officers' Call to the first Thursday from the first Tuesday. As the officers will all be working the Fireworks Booth on both the first Tuesday and first Thursday of July, the July Officers' Call will have to be rescheduled in any case.
The Department of Veterans Affairs has launched a new hotline 1-855-VA-WOMEN (1-855-829-6636) to receive and respond to questions from Veterans, their families and caregivers about the many VA services and resources available to women Veterans. The service began accepting calls on March 27, 2013.
The hotline is staffed by knowledgeable VA employees who can provide information about benefits including health care services for women. Callers can be linked to information on claims, education or health care appointments as well as information about VA cemeteries and memorial benefits. Staff can answer urgent questions and provide referrals to homeless and mental health services as well as provide Vet Center information.
Women Veterans are entitled to apply for the same benefits as their male counterparts, which include health care and pharmacy benefits as well as education benefits, disability compensation, home loans, employment assistance and more.
I blame Al Gore and his good buddy Dave Ryals. Our last picnic had to be one of the coldest and most miserable days of the winter. That was Last Veterans' Day and Winter Storm Brutus. The picnic yesterday, June 8, had to be one of the hottest days of this time of year. It was well over 110. In any case, hardy and dedicated Post 12093 members showed up and cooked burgers in the sun. First, there was sun tea and now sun burgers. If you missed it, consider yourself Pentagon material.
The John Lukac VFW Post 12093 also held formal Memorial Day Services at the Palm Northwest Mortuary & Cemetery (6701 N Jones Blvd, Las Vegas, NV 89131). map at 2:00 PM. Colonel Jim Cluff USAF commanding the 432nd Wing and 432nd Air Expeditionary Wing gave the excellent keynote address. This was the first of what we hope will be a long series of annual events. We also wish to thank Hope and Dave, who acted as one of the color guards and as bugler, for their so valuable assistance. Palm Northwest and the whole Palm organization did a wonderful job. It was a small but moving event.
Rest in peace, brothers and sisters. May God bless you and your families who have given so much for us.

The John Lukac VFW Post 12093 hosted a 1Mile Walk/5K Run at 9:00 AM on Saturday May 25, 2013 to benefit The Wounded Warrior Project, Sprirt Therapies' Horses Healing Heroes and this Post. The event took place at Centennial Hills Park and was very successful. We had about 400 participants who seemed to have a really good time. Many volunteers were deeply involved and have the Post's heartfelt gratitude. We want to especially note and thank the people from Creech AFB who were stellar in their assistance. Plans are already underway to do it again next year.
A special thank you to our proud sponsors:
Thank you for making this event happen!
